Direct Payments in Scotland

Newcross Healthcare accepts Direct Payments for homecare services.

What are Direct Payments?

Direct payments are local council payments for people who have been assessed as needing help from social services, and who would like to arrange and pay for their own care and support services instead of receiving them directly from the local council. A person must be able to give their consent to getting direct payments and manage them, even if they need daily help to do this.

How do I get Direct Payments?

You can only get direct payments if you’ve been assessed by your local council social services as needing care and support services.

  • You must be over 16
  • disabled people aged 16 or over (with short or long-term needs)
  • disabled parents for children’s service
  • carers aged 16 or over (including people with parental responsibility for a disabled child)
  • elderly people who need community care services

Whether you are the person who needs the services, a parent of a disabled child or an attorney or guardian you must agree before you can get direct payments. But you can get as much help as you need to make that decision.

Your local authority will only give you direct payments if it is satisfied that you will be able to manage them. You can however get as much help as you need to manage the payments. Your local authority will be able to tell you more about managing payments and where you can get help locally.

What can I use Direct Payments for?

You can use direct payments to arrange support tailored to meet your individual needs. You can decide what sort of help you need, how you want the help to be provided and the times when you want to have help. The money must be used to meet the needs for which Social Services have agreed you should have help.

What are the advantages of Direct Payments?

You are in control. You can choose who supports you, how they support you and when. People who use direct payments enjoy the flexibility and choice that direct payments can bring, and frequently comment on how they have gained greater self-esteem, confidence, and control over how they live their lives.
