Newcross helping to achieve dream careers

Newcross is one of the UK's leading providers of specialist clinical training, delivering between 150 and 200 courses to over 1,000 Nurses and Healthcare Assistants. In the past few months we have recruited a team of Associate Trainers to deliver courses across the UK. Swansea Healthcare Coordinator and Social Media Champion Nicola Carter met with one of them to find out about the role.

Led by our dedicated in-house clinical trainers and supported by a network of individually selected local partners, all Clinical Courses are developed with and endorsed by our Clinical Governance Team. Swansea Healthcare Assistant Leanne Thomas began her career in care in 2000 at the age of 17 and joined Newcross last year.

"I went into care is that I had cared for my mother from the age of 8, when she was diagnosed with a bone degenerative disease in her spine

After working in a range of healthcare environments including different Nursing and Residential homes, in roles from Care Assistant to Deputy Manager, Leanne then worked as a Support Worker, working up to Senior Support Worker, in Swansea Council for 10 years. It was here that she first became interested in becoming a trainer, but unfortunately these roles were sparse.

Leanne took two years out of the care sector after losing both of her parents, but decided to return after missing it. It was here she joined Newcross.

"I attended a Manual Handling course delivered by Sean Villiers [South West Clinical Trainer]. I recall answering a lot of questions during this, and asked if there were any openings in the Training department. As luck would have it there was a space available on the 'Train The Trainer' course, which I completed the following month."

"I feel that everything has fallen into place from the day I plucked up the courage to follow my dream career. When I attended the course I was a bag of nerves as I knew I would have to conquer one more fear - standing up and presenting in front of people! Simon Smart [Clinical Training Manager] and Sean delivered the 'Train The Trainer' course, and their belief, confidence and learning techniques were contagious! They believed in every single one of us, and, with their encouragement and support, at the end of the course I scored 33/35 on the final test."

Leanne delivered her first course in her home branch in Swansea, together with another member of the training team, and upon successfully passing her assessment she is now delivering training solo across the Wales and West region.

"My confidence comes on in leaps and bounds with each course I deliver. I have the continued support from the rest of the Training team and am so excited to see where this new role takes me.  I love to travel to the branches in my region, meeting new people and seeing new places. It really is a dream come true."
