Newcross and People Power Saves Isles of Scilly Care Home

The Isles of Scilly’s only care home has been saved from closure thanks to people power and a little help from Newcross Healthcare.

Park House located in Hugh Town, has 11 residential beds and also offers respite care and day care for older people, however, according to the Council of the Isles Scilly, which runs the service, the decision to close the care home was due to "significant recruitment issues" making the home "unsafe". The decision was deeply unpopular with local residents as the closure would have meant that the home’s residents would have had to have been moved to the mainland for their care.

We asked Susan Smith, the Healthcare Co-Ordinator at our Truro branch who has coordinated Newcross’s response to the situation about the role Newcross has played in supporting the home.

How did the island change the council's mind regarding the closure? –

There was a big out cry when the closure became general knowledge. This was on national news. It all culminated in a meeting of the towns people and council. Nobody wanted the home to close, and they all agreed to get behind it. Accommodation was found, and with a big recruitment drive, the right staff was found.

Did Newcross play a role in this?

Yes, our Nurse Sarah Phillips who is an island girl herself living over here in Plymouth attended the meeting and spoke well in favour of keeping the home open - she was over there for Newcross  working with the intention of running the home  whilst the Clients were found homes on the mainland. Without our cover, the home would have most certainly had to close.

How many Newcross staff members work at the home?  -

As you can understand, getting staff to go out to the Island is not the easiest of quests but thanks to the excellent team in Truro and our close relationship with the homes Administrator Maggie Dean we have been able to provide for the homes staffing needs. We have had two Matrons over there working two or three weeks each time; Tina Howard and Maggie Warriner and Sarah Philips who is a nurse. We also have a night HCA working there called Claire Broughton. All have been excellent.

What does the future hold for the home & Newcross' role with it? -

I am delighted to say that the home is safe. A new manager and other staff have been found, and hopefully, now the home will go back to normal. As usual, Newcross will be there to help cover sickness and holidays.
