NurChat 03/01/17 – Reflecting, setting goals and staying motivated
Time flies so fast. We blinked and 2016 was gone! Days, weeks, months - they have a tendency to just merge into one unless we take control of the time we have and plan the things we want to achieve. Did you set yourself any goals for 2016? Did you achieve them? What were your highlights of the year?
Reflection at this time of year is a powerful practice and turning ambitions into goals for 2017 is a great way to get motivated.
Reflecting on 2016
For us, one of the big highlights of the year was meeting so many of you at RCN Congress in Glasgow. The value of seeing colleagues and friends face to face can never be understated. Don’t get me wrong, social media channels are an essential way of keeping in touch and having meaningful discussions, but nothing beats meeting up in person when the time allows.
Another highlight for us was attending the House of Commons to take part in the round table debate on the removal of the student nurse bursary. As we all know, despite many voices in opposition to this move, it was agreed that the bursary will be retired. From September 2017, all student nurses in England will be self-funding, probably with a student loan.
2016 also saw our biggest ever #NurChat. We were joined by 243 NurChatters on our October chat connecting student nurses with the wider healthcare community on Twitter. It was wonderful to see so many new faces. And to all our regular NurChatters who’ve supported us throughout the year, thank you.
So, what next in 2017?
The start of a new year means new potential and new opportunities. So what do you want to do with it? Are you planning a new project, a new job, or simply focussing on taking better care of yourself?
It’s always difficult with busy work schedules and other commitments to find time focus on our own development, but setting yourself at least one goal will help guide you throughout the year.
Maybe this is your year to become a mentor. Maybe it's about starting a new initiative to build awareness of something you're passionate about. Maybe it's simply about making small changes to live a healthier lifestyle. Or is this the year you become a qualified nurse?
We'd love to hear your plans for 2017! We'll also be talking about:
- Your highlights of 2016 – best and worst bits?
- What did you learn from both the good and the bad?
- What do you want to change in 2017?
- What are your goals for the year?
- How are you going to keep your focus and motivation
Our #NurChat family is nothing if not a collaborative environment, so if you’ve got something you’re working on or an idea you want to nurture, let’s discuss it.
