Our recruitment process

Newcross applies rigorous standards when recruiting new staff, ensuring we only employ people with a compassionate approach, who genuinely care for the well-being of the clients they’ll look after. The most important thing is that they’ll give the best possible care.

Candidates are considered for their aptitude and suitability through a six-stage process. It’s a robust system, which means the people we hire can be proud to wear the Newcross uniform. Meanwhile, Newcross clients and service users can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing they're in the hands of trusted experts.

Initial screening

When we receive an application, we assess the merits of the individual, their qualifications and experience, but also their desire to care for clients. When we meet with the applicant, we can discuss this with them and decide whether or not to accept their application.

Face-to-face interview

The next stage is an in-depth interview with a Business Centre Manager or Team Leader at one of our branches. The candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge and experience, but also their passion for care. In the interview, we can judge whether or not they’re right for Newcross. Registered nurses are taken through a skills checklist by a Skills Recruiter or by the Business Centre Manager if they are a qualified nurse.

References and checks

Before hiring, we carry out an enhanced criminal record check. We’ll thoroughly check the applicant’s references for their last three years of employment and/or study. This includes anyone wanting to rejoin Newcross (which happens a lot). They must submit references for the jobs they’ve had since leaving and we also check whether the applicant has a valid moving and handling certificate.


By the time we invite someone to join the Newcross team they will have been thoroughly vetted. If they need any further training, we ensure they receive it. Before working a single shift, each new hire must pass through our induction programme. If they will be working with a client with complex needs, they will be given another induction specific to that situation by existing staff and a clinical assessor.

Just how rigorous is the process? Well, only about one in eight applicants ends up wearing the Newcross uniform. If you ask Newcross to provide care in the home or are an organisation we supply care staff to, you can be confident that you’ll be getting the best people.
