Apprentice scheme success for local healthcare firm

Newcross Healthcare Solutions specialises in providing top- quality healthcare staff and a range of care at home services for public, private and individual clients. The company started in Torquay 18 years ago and has now expanded to become a nationwide employer with over 30 UK branches and rapid expansion plans.

The company is looking to support its plans by growing the local apprenticeship scheme it offers. It ensures all staff are trained in a range of different competencies and given regular opportunities to update their knowledge and skills.

The company is recruiting for three new apprentices for its Head Quarter offices, based in Berry Pomeroy, to work in the IT, Accounts and Quality Assurance departments. The apprenticeships will be a year initially and will involve a day release or 'on-site' assessment to a level 2 or 3 NVQ standard (or similar.)

Holly Mills “I joined in August 2013 just after completing my first year of A’ levels. My role as a training apprentice has evolved significantly over the 7 months that I have been here as I have taken on a lot more responsibilities and evolved the way I do certain tasks in my role.

“Within my role I work closely with internal and external bodies. I organise training courses for both office and healthcare employees and also make sure that all the delegates on the courses are happy with their training by monitoring their feedback. I also make sure that courses are running cost effectively and that we consider the quality of the course as well as the cost.

“As Newcross is growing so quickly there is always so much going on and lots to do. It has also been highly beneficial to work closely with the HR Director and this has helped to advance my learning. I feel I have learnt so much within my time at Newcross and appreciate how much support I have had with my apprenticeship and it has been a great opportunity and environment to further my knowledge.”

Sophie Tolchard “I joined Newcross in March 2011 as Head Office Administration Apprentice. The experience I gained in my two year apprenticeship whilst working at Newcross supported me in successfully achieving my Level 2 and 3 in Business and Administration.

“On final completion of my apprenticeship I was appointed as the Senior Management Team Administrator. I am responsible for providing and delivering an effective and professional service to the Directors and Senior Management Team ensuring all needs are met and any meetings, personal requirements and arrangements are fulfilled.

“When looking back at my 3 years working for Newcross it is exciting to see how much the company has grown. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far and look forward to the opportunities ahead.”

Morgan Riley “My name is Morgan, I’m 19 years old. I joined Newcross Healthcare Solutions Accounts team in September 2013 on a full time basis, attending college one day a week. I am currently studying my Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), Level 3 apprenticeship.

“My work varies daily, depending on what departments I am required to assist in. I help credit control with processing BACS/Cheque payments, resolving client queries and raising amendments to accounts where required. When working in the payroll department, I help process timesheets and assist with resolving errors by contacting our relevant branch staff which is great for getting to know people and opens up communication channels. I also help the Purchase Ledger department by raising purchase orders, processing invoices, ordering stationery and dealing with branch requests for corporate items that require sending out via post.

“Recently I’ve started to further my knowledge by assisting the Management accountant with weekly reports, accruals and prepayments as well as posting bank transactions and reconciling them. By doing the tasks above, it’s been extremely beneficial in helping with my studies as it gives me a greater knowledge of understanding by putting it into practice.”

Kailee Coffin “I have been an apprentice with Newcross for a year now and it has given me the opportunity to see what it's like to work within a large, nationwide company in a very hands on way. In my role I am involved in all aspects of the day to day running of the Head Office from sorting the post to meeting and greeting visitors as well as more in depth work within Quality Assurance and Human Resources. This experience has enabled me to develop a wide variety of skills that will help me as I move into a more specialised role within the company.”
