Finding the appropriate care for a loved one nearing the end of their life is a difficult task for any family. At Newcross, end-of-life care is front of mind for our staff who are in regular contact with service-users who have reached this stage.
End-of-life care case study
One of our Lead Nurses visited an end-of-life client, who told of his own ‘nightmare’ story. His previous experience in hospital resulted in him being displaced from his home. Disillusioned and disappointed, he felt as though his one wish, to end his days in the familiar comfort of the home, had been adamantly ignored.
The gentleman’s family member recalls there being a real ‘battle’ with previous healthcare staff and the ambulance crew to make his request to remain at home a reality. However, she expressed nothing but praise for Complex Care Team Leader, Debbie Yeaxlee-Batch, who showed her patience and compassion at a time when the family truly needed it. Debbie ensured that with the help of the multidisciplinary team going out to regularly assess the gentleman’s wellbeing, his wish to stay at home was made possible.
Complex Care Manager, James McAlpine, is delighted with Debbie’s contribution. He shared his thoughts with us:
“Debbie encapsulates the values and standards Newcross stands for through her approach to her clients, their families and the staff she works alongside. She makes time for all she engages with and treats each person as an individual which has resulted in the feedback received from the family. It's hard to believe she has only been our Team Leader for three months and progressed so quickly. I am very proud of Debbie - she is real asset to the team.”
