How our founders are helping those most in need
We have big news! But firstly, we’d like to start by saying a very big thank you to everyone who contributed to the Disaster Emergency Appeal dress down day we held earlier this month. Together, we smashed our target and raised a generous £257.50!
Newcross Healthcare is proudly matching this amount – bringing the grand total to £515.
But that’s not all…
Founders Stephen Pattrick and Michelle Gorringe (RN) have pledged a staggeringly generous £20,000 to Shelterbox in order to help support the families facing drought and starvation in East Africa.
According to the DEC, in one month that’s equivalent to:
- Supporting 800 malnourished children with a life-saving peanut paste
- Supplying clean drinking water for 667 families
- 200 clinics receiving extra supplies to treat severely emaciated children
With the world facing its worst humanitarian crisis since the end of the Second World War, this magnanimous news couldn’t come at a better time. Families in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan are not only facing famine, but many are also fleeing the ongoing conflict in South Sudan.
An increase in fighting has seen mass movement across the East African borders, putting pressure on already impoverished and struggling countries. After three years of poor crops and livestock due to low rainfall, food is scarce – with that available coming with a hefty price tag.
But the food crisis isn’t the only problem.
Forced migration also puts the displaced individuals in danger of violence, communal disease, poor living conditions, not the mention the lack of education and schooling for the young.
This is where Shelterbox comes in. There are already volunteers in East Africa assessing the unique needs of those most at risk. They will not only help to provide food and water, but also tents, bedding, solar lighting and the tools to start rebuilding a community.
We’d like to say a massive thank you to Stephen and Michelle for helping these charities to make a real difference to the lives of those facing the worst times.
Without your donation, a lot of people would be facing an even tougher time. As working members of the healthcare sector who aim to help the vulnerable, we all appreciate your altruistic actions, and are glad to be part of a company that leads by example.
If you would like to contribute further to the cause, Shelterbox are now running a #firstpoundcoin campaign, encouraging supporters to donate their first new pound coin to the charity. You can donate here, plus – follow their @ShelterBox twitter page for the latest news, donations and pictures.
