DIY SOS and Newcross change lives in Bristol

Since September 2017 Newcross have been supporting an incredible service user, Ryan Pollard. DIY SOS and hundreds of Bristol businesses helped Ryan to return to his home, with the support of Newcross Bristol Complex Care Team.

After suffering a brain injury in his teenage years, Ryan has been at a specialist rehabilitation centre in Gloucester for the past five and a half years. The DIY SOS team over-hauled Mr. and Mrs. Pollard’s family home, allowing Ryan to live safely at home - a cost of over £180,000!

The impressive work carried out by companies from around Bristol, who gave their resources and time, included installing a wet room, chair lift, social space, physio area and enabling Ryan to manuovere easily around the house. The most incredible part was that it was done in only nine days!

With Ryan needing round the clock support when he came out of the rehabilitation centre, our exceptional Bristol Complex Care team of Simon, Chris, Eugene, Dawn and Elena provide the assistance Ryan needs to increase his quality of life.

Since moving home Ryan's day to day life has dramatically improved, from getting out of the house walking the dog to becoming a confident man, this is down to the extensive training our Complex Care staff receive.

“Our team of five have learned the skills required to support Ryan. They are truly exceptional, providing the care that other healthcare agencies just could not”, said Esther Portlock, Lead Nurse in our Bristol Complex Care Team.

It isn’t just simply a case of delivering care as a service, it’s about caring for Ryan as an individual, getting to know him and his wonderful personality. This is only made possible by the incredible dedication and hard work from our healthcare staff.
