Out of Office: Newcross IT Apprentice Tiuri De Jong Wins Gold in the Southern Taekwondo Championships
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, known for head-height kicks, jumping and spinning and fast kicking techniques. Emphasis on speed and agility is a distinguishing characteristic of the sport.
Last weekend, Newcross IT Apprentice Tiuri De Jong headed out the office, and took part in a Paignton-based tournament, where he placed in two different competitions.
Tiuri told us...
"It was our local tournament, more widely known as the Southern Championships, held at the Leisure Centre in Paignton. There were about 3,000 competitors with an additional 2,000 spectators.
I have been studying taekwondo for three years. I started after doing a taster session at school and have loved it ever since. I am currently a black stripe, working towards my black belt grading in April.
In the events that I did, red belt patterns and blue/red belt welterweight sparring, I got a gold in sparring and placed 4th in patterns."
