Role: Head of Finance

Base: Berry Pomeroy, Devon

Length of Service: 8 years and counting

Motto: “Family comes first”

A huge congratulations to Steve Willis, who was honoured with the title of Employee of the Year for our iconic 21st Year. Steve’s commitment to the progression and improvement of Newcross is exemplary, never failing to lead his team by example. He consistently goes above and beyond what is expected; a standard to be reckoned with.

We met with Steve to gain some insights into his daily life, what motivates him and what he’s like outside of the workplace.

You’ve been with Newcross for 8 years now. What made you join us, and decide to stay?

I was relocating from Birmingham to start a family in the South West. The role at Newcross was something new, challenging and exciting and in a privately owned business with similar values to mine. I’ve stayed because no day is the same and I work with an awesome bunch of people.

How has Newcross changed since you joined?

When I joined, we had 17 locations and less than 100 office staff. Enough said…

What is your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment would be getting offered the position while sat on the top of a ski slope less than 24hrs after I had my 2nd interview. This kick-started our move to sunny Devon.

What about a moment when you have felt really proud?

Having both our Bankers and Auditors comment that the monthly operational and financial packs which my team prepare are some of the best they have seen and are better than some listed companies are able to put together.

You’ve been involved in many of our charity events, do you have a favourite?

Anything which involves eating and dressing up! I am a sucker for doing silly things for charity as you can see on the Newcross YouTube site (edit: and now these pictures!)

Aside from work, what do you like to do with your time?

I enjoy swimming, but spend most of my spare time chasing after my 3 children.

Have you ever done anything daring or adventurous?

I used to be a qualified skydiver and have jumped from a plane over 20 times. I am an adrenalin junkie. When I was little, I wanted to be an airline pilot, so perhaps my skydiving days stemmed from there.

Do you have a favourite musical artist or genre?

I like all music, but if I had to listen to one album, it would be a fight between Radiohead’s Pablo Honey and Muse’s Showbiz.

Tell us something we might not know about you

I have Scottish heritage and am a descendant of the family who created Rose’s Lime Juice (now owned by Schweppes – boo).

And if you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see and why?

I would like to walk alongside dinosaurs, or from a human perspective see how an ancient civilisation (like the Mayans, or Egyptians) ran their societies.

“I’d like to add a special thank you to my team, who work extremely hard to make us such a successful team”
