What is a community care assistant?

There are lots of different roles in healthcare to choose from. A community care assistant is one option, but what does this mean? Here, we share all you need to know!

Community care assistant roles and responsibilities

As a community care assistant, you’ll work with people in their own homes rather than in care settings, such as a nursing homes or hospitals. The role is mainly centred around providing personalised care and helping individuals to live their lives as independently as possible.

Community care assistants must be able to deliver care with compassion and enthusiasm, while contributing positively to an individual’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Those you care for could include elderly people, those with mobility issues, or individuals living with dementia.

What does a community care assistant do?

The tasks you complete will change depending on who you’re caring for. For example, some individuals may need help with washing and dressing whereas others will require assistance with cooking and moving around their homes. You may also need to prompt people to take their medication, and sometimes assist with administering this.

Following each visit, you’ll be required to complete notes highlighting what you did during your visit and any concerns or changes that might need addressing. For some individuals, especially those who live alone, you could be one of the only people they see. This makes this a very important role and one that makes a true difference to people’s lives.

What qualifications are needed?

You don’t need any specific qualifications to become a community care assistant with Newcross.
